Unique to just one mine in Minnesota, Mary Ellen Stromatolite (Collenia undosa) is a vestige of our Earth's ancient past from the Lower Proterozoic era. It consists of fossilized prehistoric colonies of by photosynthesizing cyanobacteria, about 2-3 billion years old. They are embedded in a type of red agate. The mine is the Mary Ellen Mine, Biwabik Formation on the Mesabi Range, St. Louis County, Minnesota. These stones are ideal for the history buff as well as anyone interested in fossils and our Earth's formation. I feel a great connection to ancestors with this stone.

This stone is also known as Fossilized Stromatolite or Red Jasper or Red Agate. These wonderful stones are polished smooth and have unique patterns of stripes and swirls of all hues of dark red, black and brown. They are just so fascinating and pretty, and of course all natural and all one-of-a-kind.

Metaphysically, you can use it in a healing grid, for laying on the body and as an ancestor stone on an altar or mediation room.
