Diopside is a calcium magnesium silicate of the pyroxene group, most familiar as the vivid green gemstone chrome diopside — a stone whose color rivals emerald at a far gentler price. It also appears as deep black star diopside (showing a four-rayed star), as rare violet violane, and as more ordinary green-grey crystals. We treat diopside here as the parent species behind those varieties.

Is diopside a good alternative to emerald?
Many people use it that way. Chrome diopside can match emerald's green at a fraction of the cost and is typically untreated, though it's softer (Mohs 5.5–6.5 vs beryl's 7.5–8), so it needs gentler wear. We'd rather you value it as diopside than think of it only as a stand-in.
What makes star diopside show a star?
Tiny aligned needle-like inclusions reflect light into a four-rayed star (asterism) when the black stone is cut as a smooth cabochon and lit from a single source. It's the same optical effect as a star sapphire, in a different mineral.
Is diopside safe in water?
A brief rinse is fine, but diopside has cleavage and is softer than quartz, so avoid long soaking, hot water, and ultrasonic cleaners, and dry it promptly.
